What happens when poetry becomes a space for reflection, dialogue and connection?

Through a series of workshops, 37 international students from eight countries created over 50 erasure poems exploring their role as newcomers in reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Drawing from works by Indigenous authors, the poems reflect on colonial histories, migration, hope, pain, healing and belonging on Indigenous Lands.

On Land, In Absence: An Immersive Erasure Poetry Installation brings these student voices beyond the classroom through movement, light and an immersive soundscape. As poems are projected, visitors will hear students reading their work alongside the sounds of the creative process, inviting reflection on fostering respectful relationships with Indigenous Peoples and Lands.

Developed by Dr. Kathleen (Kaye) Hare and Dr. Gitanjaly Chhabra in consultation with UCW's Indigenous Action Committee, the installation transforms research into an engaging and thought-provoking experience for the UCW and broader Metro Vancouver communities.Visit the installation this September to experience an immersive journey through poetry, sound and light.
